Hot on the heels of yesterday’s arrivals comes this pair of Evangelion figures. Rei and Kaworu are the first in a set of arcade prizes from Sega, called (deep breath) Evangelion Vignette Centre of Tokyo-3. Asuka and Mari have been announced for release early next year, and I really hope they bring out a Shinji to round out the set. The figures are based on a promotional poster for the Rebuild of Evangelion; an image which has been used for both currently released films with more characters added in the second time around. Incidentally it’s an excellent piece of work by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and you may remember that I have it in puzzle form. But I digress, let’s get back to the figures.
With most arcade prizes it’s hard to come by pictures of the complete figures before they’re released, so you have to order them based on concept art or early (usually unpainted) production samples, or risk missing out. I took a chance on these and I’m very glad I did. They have a healthy weight to them, the build quality seems good, the sculpting is accurate and detailed and there are no real paint issues to speak of. Most importantly, the figures look like Rei and Kaworu. Odd faces can be a real deal-breaker with otherwise nice figures, but Sega have really nailed the characters here. Throw in a height of around 17cm (without the bases) and the already low price of this pair becomes a real bargain.
The bases of all four figures will join up to create the vignette mentioned in the series title, and if Asuka and Mari live up to the standard set by the first pair then it will be a very nice set indeed. I recommend grabbing these first two while you can to ensure that you complete the set. According to HobbyLink Japan, Rei and Kaworu were released in limited quantities, and they seem to be going fast (Kaworu in particular) so you might want to act quickly. Asuka and Mari are available for pre-order now.
