Its been awhile since a show pulled me in like Neon Genesis Evangelion did. One of the main attractions was the simple fact that it was a pre-2000 show. The rough animation and foreign character designs made it feel like a whole new vessel of entertainment. The past’s view on the post-apocalyptic future made for an interesting backdrop to the cast of damaged humans. All of the main characters, minus Rei, had something we could relate to, which added such depth to the show. The struggles against one’s self were done well, nothing outstretched like a recent show (Ergo Proxy) that dragged on the psychological battles too far.
Everything was going splendid. Great action mixed with some heavy drama… this could turn up to be one of my favorite shows. But then we hit the ending. Two episodes, 40 minutes, of psychological mumbo jumbo. Scattered thoughts drag on in repetitive segments for what seemed like ages until Shinji finally comes to the terms that he has worth in this world other than being an Eva pilot. I was hoping for more, for something that wrapped up the mysteries I had about certain people.
For a show that kept me on a high for so many episodes the underwhelming ending left me disappointed. Looks like I’ll have to check out the movies that have been coming out. Overall 9/10
