Satan probably resides within her the moment she was born.
Can’t blame Flameheart for burying him in pillows
Daichi in swimwear?! Will it be like Hideyoshi at the swimming pool?! Kyaaaaaaaaaaa~
Oh wait, Daichi is not a trap.
Lulz meido!
Meh, I don’t care about this pairing.
No NSFW pictures this week. Something has to be sacrificed for the main pair to grow closer and having him forever seeing her nude body seems detrimental to the relationship when a tsundere is involved.
One of my favorite director’s, Masaaki Yuasa, has a new show debuting in Japan this April under the title “Yojo-Han Shinwa Taikei” of which the trailer is above. Yuasa’s previous works include the film ‘Mind Game’ and television shows such as ‘Kemonozume’ and ‘Kaiba’. Sadly, none of these have been released stateside yet. The first trailer is looking trippy and very cool and I’m excited to see what this new project of Yuasa’s will be like.
I was browsing around the web the other day and happened upon a site that I thought I’d post up on here.
Figure.fm
It’s an online community for people to post up photos, reviews and discussions of Japanese figures, dolls, models and other such various toys. It’s a great site for inspiration for shots, or if your just bored and want something to look at when your bored.
The site features anything from Nendoroid to Gundams, Dollfies to Figmas. It pretty much caters exclusively to the Japanese toy market. There is a category for Transformers but when I click it it seems there isn’t anything to be found. Perhaps users haven’t uploading anything on that subject yet.
Like I’ve mentioned, some of the users post reviews, which is help full when your thinking about buying a new figure but aren’t quite sure if you want it or not. However, most of the reviews I’ve seen are not all that thorough (but I haven’t seen a lot of ‘em yet), but they do offer lots of good photos of their subject, which seems to be the main focus of the site. I just found this site recently and already think it’s something people should check out.
If you’re like me and need a bit of variety here’s another site you may want to visit.
JoeDios.com
This site is a complete contrast to the other site I mentioned and features 3 3/4 G.I. Joe figures, customs, but above all dioramas.
It’s another great community site to browse photos, look at dios, or to get inspirations for customs. This site also offers up news, reviews, template files, a forum … Actually now that I think about it this site has a lot to offer. It’s awesome and I recommend it.
On both these sites users can post photos and other users give their comments and critiques. I personally don’t have accounts on either of the sites, but if it’s something you’re into, then you may want to join up on one of these communities.
I know this preview has been out for awhile now, but what better time to blog about it then now (when I have nothing else to write about). I won’t go to much into the story, but all you need to know is this: it has the names Key and Jun Maeda attached to it. The same names that made Clannad, Kanon, and Air to name a few. Sure, Kyoto Animation isnt involved, but the animation still looks good, and the music in the preview is great as well. Since we’re not getting Little Busters! anytime soon, I’m gonna have to make due with this, and if Jun Maeda is involved, tear-inducing drama is to be expected. So yeah, can’t wait till April (this AND K-On!!)!
I started watching a new show recently, of which I started watching solely because of a picture I saw of the main character wearing thigh highs. As I watched the first episode, I found myself analyzing the female lead’s looks, personality, and actions, and decided she passed my standards. Then I thought to myself why I was doing that and decided it was simply waifu selection related…which got me thinking about waifus themselves. What exactly is this obsessive notion of waifus?
For those that don’t know, a waifu (which is a rough version of saying “wife” in a Japanese accent) is an anime character, video game character, or generally any fictional character that a person becomes emotionally attached to despite the character being fake. What exactly is the motivation for people for the otaku crowd to look for a 2D waifu? Does it stem from loneliness or roneriness (there is a difference)? I’m a single guy. Do I search for a waifu in order to fill some void left in my real life, or maybe because it’s easier to become attached to a character in a show than a real life person? I’m starting to consider it being some kind of instinct, in that whenever I see a female I must consider her qualifications for being my partner, whether she be real or fake. Maybe it’s just another way to enjoy the show. Who knows. And another thought that’s been bugging me: do female viewers search their favorite shows for husbandos (if there is such a term)? (I’m thinking it’s a male thing)
There are a number of limitations on the waifu search as well. The most prevalent is age. I’ve spent enough time on the internet to have been called a pedophile for watching an anime about high school girls (which is even funnier considering there are people in high school which are of legal age). But what does the age of your perspective waifu really mean? When I’m analyzing a potential waifu, I’m not taking into account the age given to her by the context of the show, I’m thinking of her as a normal adult. It’s only after that I remember contextually speaking what her age is. Even so, if by some miracle she were to materialize in the real world, if it were my real choice as a waifu it wouldn’t be a problem waiting for her to age a few more years before starting any kind of relationship.
Which raises an interesting question: what do people actually expect should their waifu suddenly appear before them in real life (ignoring the obvious impossibility)? Does a materialized character automatically fall in love with you when she appears? What’s the point if the girl just falls in love with you as soon as she shows up, that’s just a fake love forced upon her by god you whatever force brought her into this world. I would much rather spend time with her real self (figuratively speaking) and see if the love doesn’t form on its own. What are the rules for her suddenly appearing in a completely new world? If it were a normal person, they would flip their shit about being removed from their normal life and placed in a brand new strange world. Does that mean being brought to the real world comes with a rewriting of her mind/memories to accomodate her for being in a new world? That of course just begs the question of how similar that is to the whole instantly falling in love problem. Maybe it’s just best if they can’t be brought to us in reality and we continue just admiring from afar.
In the end, no matter how futile, having a waifu can be a very uplifting and calming thing. In dire times when everything in your life is going wrong, sitting back and watching an episode of the show your waifu is from can really calm your mind and grant you a momentary respite from reality. Or maybe coming home from a hard day’s whatever-it-is-you-do to a picture of your love as your computer’s desktop. That’s the real message in all of this. No matter how strange people may say it is, fact of the matter is that choosing a waifu is a harmless gesture that can improve a person’s well-being. It’s all in the name of love.
P.S. The timing of this post and Navy’s is purely coincidental.
P.P.S Since I’m sure you’re all wondering: Tomoyo(CLANNAD), Miyako(Hidamari), Yomiko Readman(ROD)/Cheska(FMA, they are too similar to separate), Ninamori(FLCL), Kiri Komori(SZS). No particular order.
Summary: Was he really staying for good? For so long she had waited for him to come back. Now that he is, what kind of love awaits them now? Warning for my badly explict text and poorly sappy plot.
Author’s Notes: Just a Spin the Bottle thing that never really was. I haven’t visited Quizilla much so I don’t know how it works but I hope I made some “improvements.” Oh, and she doesn’t have a name so, you can make up one for yourself.

“Do I have to? You guys have no idea how much work I have to finish before the end of the day.” I whined. I wasn’t lying, there really was. “Stupid Leader-sama…” But I didn’t complain about that. This game I was playing, the guys here had too much free time.
“Come on, Marieru-chan. Have some fun for once!” Deidara complained, shoving the bowl full of pieces of paper towards me. The other members also urged with him. I sighed. “Looks like I have no choice in this one…” I reluctantly slid my hand in the bowl and got a piece of paper. “Timeless…” I murmured after unfolding it.
Silence was all I heard for several seconds. I mentally sighed to myself. “That’s all I had to do, huh?” As far as I can remember, someone in the room represented that word you’d pick. I didn’t know. Not like I’ve ever done this before.
“Hmph, I don’t remember placing that sort of word in there…” Deidara mumbled to him self, looking around for that person. Hidan and he were giving themselves confused looks. Even they didn’t know who it was.
“Can I please leave? I still have to practice my piano pieces…” I asked with the slightest hint of sadness in my tone. I didn’t know why. I looked at the rest of the members. I never paid much attention to my surroundings whenever everyone looked at me. Playing music’s been my favorite pastime. It’s pretty much a lot better than wasting my time locked in the closet with someone.
“Hey, why not pick anoth—!” Deidara stopped when he heard the door slam. “How dare they drag me here just to waste my time…?” I was humiliated. Whoever that “Timeless” person was, oh boy, was he up for a beating. I went back to my room and found the piano sitting there. I didn’t feel like playing at all. It was the only thing Leader-sama allowed me to take with me.
I scanned through some piano scores. Some were simple, some were complicated and I found one that I could sing with. It wasn’t much of a happy song although decided to play it since it was something I needed now. Hidan and Deidara are such idiots.”
I sat myself on the bench that came with the piano, preparing to start. The music was lovely. It was relaxing and it made me loosen up a little bit. My whole consciousness took over and I began singing to it.
In a very unusual way one time I needed you.
In a very unusual way you were my friend.
Maybe it lasted a day, maybe it lasted an hour.
But, somehow it will never end.
In a very unusual way I think I’m in love with you.
In a very unusual way I want to cry.
Something inside me goes week,
Something inside me surrenders.
And you’re the reason why,
You’re the reason why
There were footsteps getting louder but I wasn’t paying attention. My fingers moved swiftly on the keys playing the right notes. I didn’t know what I really was doing at all. The music has completely moved me. Everything that was happening felt so right, it was as though I was never mad at Deidara or Hidan at all.
You don’t know what you do to me,
You don’t have a clue.
You can’t tell what its like to be me looking at you.
It scares me so, that I can hardly speak.
My eyes were closed though I wasn’t aware. This hasn’t been the first time it happens. I was glad music took me…It was always so…so…
In a very unusual way, I owe what I am to you.
Though at times it appears I won’t stay, I never go.
Special to me in my life,
Since the first day that I met you.
How could I ever forget you,
Once you had touched my soul?
In a very unusual way,
You’ve made me whole.
“Timeless…” I heard someone whisper close to my ear. My eyes shot open. I felt cold hands holding both of my shoulders from behind. My fingers began to shiver. I stopped playing. I couldn’t turn, I didn’t want to turn. My heart started to beat like crazy. My eyes moved to the right to get a better look. “Red hair…” I gasped.
“You…you…” I stammered between breaths. I couldn’t believe it but I wanted to. So much a dream I had of him to be standing there. I felt my eyes swelling up. Tears were going to fall. Bad timing, I didn’t want them to show. Not now…
His languid features hypnotized my very being. All of the emotions that ran though my body were giving its side effects. His hands never felt so warm…why did he have to come back…?
I felt his hands move to the sides of my waist, bringing them together, extending his arms in an embrace. His head laid softly on the crane of my neck, slowly breathing on it. My fingers began to twitch as my stomach churned. My sight was beginning in a blur. I was definitely caught off guard…what should I do?
“I’m really happy…you still stayed.”He said as I felt his voice shaking. His fingers started trembling. He gasped, and held me in tighter. His lips found my neck and lightly sucked it. I held in my breath. My fingers clenched into fists. I tried to regulate my breathing but I couldn’t— not when my head was spinning. His hands were slowly moving around my lower stomach, tracing repeated curves with his fingers.
“______-chan…please, s-stop me now…”He whispered closely to my ear. I didn’t know what to say. It shamefully felt wonderful, as he also began to lick the back of my ear. He showed no sign in stopping but it started to feel light and hesitant as if, he was still giving me another chance to shove him off and run away.
I closed my eyes. I held on to his hands, and slowly untangled them apart.
END POV
He showed the slightest hint of shock as he felt shivers down his spine. He suddenly felt horrible of what he did. Did she not want him anymore, or maybe at all? He didn’t. He wanted to discovery every inch of her body and knew that he would never get tired of doing it again and again. The moment he saw her, he felt hot under his clothes. Her soft voice rang forever in his ears, almost as if telling him to come to her. He didn’t hesitate. It was too long since he last saw her. Just telling her to come back was almost too impossible. He wanted to love her, only if she would let him.
He felt like it was over. That she didn’t want to see him anymore. Maybe…just after a kiss he would be satisfied…right? No, it was all he could take from her if it were to be his last. He showed oblivious hints of sadness, as she turned her head. He shuddered again, finally seeing her face after all the lost time he didn’t spend with her. Her eyes were still glowing with an emotion he couldn’t decipher, her high cheekbones perfectly formed her face when she looked up at him. With all of his desire desperately locked within him, he held her intensely warm cheeks and lightly kissed her on the forehead.
“I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have done that…” He whispered, feeling his voice cracking. He felt awful. Even after apologizing he still wanted to feel her, to touch her, to love her…
He needed get away. Just for now, maybe she would still have love left in her to give to someone else. His mind was lying again. It was too much. Leaving was his best option. He turned away, not wanting to look back at whatever reaction she would give him. His eyes widened as he felt her hand on his.
“Sasori-kun…you’re not leaving again, are you?” Her voice was shaking, as if she was in near tears again. Her eyes were piercing the ground, as a teardrop fell after another. It was only then she realized what he was about to do. She didn’t want him to leave! But she suddenly felt like she would be just as hopeless as she was to stop him before.
That’s when it hit him. His eyes narrowed and quickly turned to look at her again. He instantly held on her shoulders and stared at her with deep concern. “No, please, don’t say that…” His expression grew softer and surprisingly more human. She was too vulnerable to ignore. She needed him still and that was all he wanted to know.
He held her again in a wholly embrace. His hands held that back of her head and her back, quickly pulling her as close as possible. He can still hear her sobs a bit louder. He bit his lower lip. This wasn’t suppose to happen. She wasn’t suppose to be crying in the first place. Her emotions were contagious. Tears never came out of his eyes, no matter how much he wanted it to.
If only he could just take back all the things he did in the past that made her cry. He hated himself to still doubt her love for him. The fact that she wanted to be held in his arms, even after all that he did to her, was more than he could take. “Please, don’t cry anymore…” He whispered along with his other endearments, trying to keep her from the thoughts that made her so. He held her tighter, keeping his body painfully close to hers. It was like he almost felt afraid that she would disappear if he let go.
–
“I want you…” She almost heard herself say. It was a shameless thing for her to say but it was kept in so deeply in her heart, she had to already let it out. It didn’t matter what would happen then on. If he was going to disappear once more, at least she wouldn’t have regrets of him never knowing her feelings.
Sasori led out a half-groan, after hearing her words. So much he had dreamed of her saying it. This was finally the perfect time to make her happy. He released her from his embrace and looked at her in the eyes, trying to restrain himself from touching her. “…and I need you, love…” He kissed her softly on the cheek. She finally received the idea that it was her last chance to finally decide on her options. She looked at him with equal desire and it was all the support he needed.
He placed his mouth on hers and kissed her with all the unrestrained passion he had kept within him. His arms were wrapped around her waist, molding her body into his hardened contour as she felt his manhood throbbing hard and slowly against hers. She moaned softly and kissed him back as she placed her arms around his neck tightly, not wanting to let go. His hands moved around her body, tracing every curve, taking in anything he could get his hands on.
His lips opened as his tongue traced the thin line between her lips coaxing her to open. She didn’t hesitate and welcomed his mouth as he drove in, wanting to taste the flavor he could never get tired with. She felt electrifying shocks run down her spine as she felt all the pleasure enter her. He moaned in her lips as his hands moved in under her shirt, claiming her breasts into his palms, savoring every moment of wanting her to feel what he was feeling, until the nubs of her breasts raised stiff and perk . She let him remove her top clothing as he instantly took it in into his mouth. She gasped in pleasure as she was slowly drifting away into the oblivion he was deliberately taking them both to.
He had never felt so happy in his life. After all they had been through, all he wanted to do now was finally giving her all the love he kept from her. What a fool he was for keeping them hidden from the beginning. Now he was certain he wasn’t going to let her go.
Before I finally shelved the Shana theme files I wanted to make one final change; a start menu image that was appealing to my specific tastes – which are generally kimono’s. Searching around on Pixv I came across a really great modified version of one of Itou’s art book images. The original image is simply of Shana in her red Yukata with the crimson hair, the artist’s image I found used the same base image and added a background and some flame effects that you normally see when Shana transforms. Before archiving all the psd templates I wanted to put this one into the start menu, things didn’t go as easily as hoped for.
In the first theme I was able to create the start menu using true size parameters and force it no to try and stretch the image (which deforms it as it can only stretch vertically). After putting the image together and then compiling the theme all the dimensions got messed up. Despite explicitly defining the sizes for each portion of the menu it kept stretching the image. Later the menu decided to cooperate and was able to finish the theme:
You can download the update (and final) version here. It will most likely be the last modification(s) made to the theme unless I get some special requests; I’m happy with the final product and hopefully everyone else is that expressed their interest. Will still work on some more icons as good material surfaces, and am looking to possibly make a (Shana) themed boot and logon screen.
I thought I should explain the very popular meme that has been circling the world and especially 4chan/2chan : ZA WARUDO . First of all this whole meme is based on a tehnique made by Dio Brando in popular manga/anime JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken or better known simply as JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure. The superior quality shown in the video game that has the same name cought attention and soon became a popular meme. The video game portrays Dio Brando ( after a combination of moves and attacks ) doing his badass signature move that has as some might put it a high degree of deadly awesomeness set to utterly destroy your opponent in the coolest way possible. The only way to describe the tehnique would be: He first stops time then he throws knives at his opponent then slams a steamroller onto him and he ends it by pummelling the steamroller until it explodes.
Dio Brando is the son of Dario Brando, a cruel man who abuses him. After the death of his father Dio is brought into the Joestar household. But soon Dio’s personality sets loose and targets George’s young son, Jonathan Joestar. As the saying goes like father like son, Dio is no exception and is a sociopath that plans to shatter Jonathan’s spirit and take his place as the favored son, even going so far as to arrange for Jonathan’s dog Danny to be burned to death.
Determined not to be stopped, and understanding the potential to enjoy power over all things, Dio takes the Stone Mask and he becomes a full fledged vampire in JoJo’s world. Dio can be seen here (drawn a bit too girly ):
Here is the original video game Dio Brando tehnique:
For the non-japanase speakers I shall again translate:
Original: ZA WARUDO! Toki wo tomare. Kurae! Roada rollera da! WRYYYY! Muda muda muda muda muda muda muda Muda muda muda muda muda muda muda Muda muda muda muda muda muda! (yes, I counted how many muda’s he says) Soshite toki ga ugoki desu.
Translation: The World! Time has stopped. Take this! Road Roller! WRYYYY! (is a shriek given off by the vampires throughout JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) Futile futile futile futile Futile futile futile futile Futile futile futile futile Futile futile futile futile Futile futile futile futile! And so the time begins to flow.
I only know one thing and that is…Don’t mess with Dio Brando! WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
I’ve been watching Bleach on and off for a while, but really couldn’t fully get into it for the first season’s worth or so. But wait! What’s this? An overarching plot? I’ve reached episode 47, so now I know that there’s at least one villain possibility: the smirking Captain of squad 3 (whose name I can’t spell to save my life). Ruyka’s brother is another: he seems to be a nasty one as well. Time will tell.
Episode 43 is bugging me, however. I could have sworn I heard an extremely familiar voice, but the IMDB isn’t backing me up on it. One of the minions of the research Captain (squad 12, I think) sounded exactly like the English voice actor for Edward Elric of FMA fame. Ah, well…maybe I’m right, maybe not.
I’m enjoying the story more now, though it’s not reaching InuYasha-FMA levels of interest so far. I’ve been advised to stick with it until episode 59 as there’s a big reveal, so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for now. I do love the idea of sentient swords so it just got a big plus in the last few episodes as Ichigo tries to master his. The biggest detractor at the moment is pacing At this point in InuYasha, we’d already hit my favorite arc (the reforging of the Tetsusaiga) and I was very emotionally invested in the characters. FMA: Brotherhood doesn’t even have this many episodes yet and much plot development has happened. With Bleach, we’re kinda stuck on the save-the-girl quest. Things are finally starting to get interesting, but I’ve had to invest a lot of time to reach this point.
That, and Don whats-his-face and Kon need to stay gone for now. The two of them were what made me almost abandon the series. I need a better hook than what I’ve got now to survive them.
Now that Lent has begun, I’m only going to be watching one episode of something a day, instead of the 10-ish I watched tonight. After marthoning InuYasha, I find that I can easily spend a few hours watching anime without even noticing the time go by. It’s nice, but bad when I have other things to accomplish!
Yes, I am full well aware of how pathetic it is for a blogger to post about a holiday when his post regarding that same holiday the previous year has not even made it to the second page of posts yet. I’ve seen several other blogs that have long celebratory posts for their one-year anniversaries, and yet here I am, well past that point in my own blog, with so very little done. It’s something of a downer, to say the least, but such is in keeping with the spirit of this cynical holiday-offshoot. For today marks both Valentine’s Day and Singles Awareness Day, the acronym for which rather appropriately spells the word “sad,” in case the joke wasn’t clear enough. But we the loyal fans of anime, even–no, especially those among us who, like me, are single, need not fret. In Japan, social traditions dictate that girls give Valentine’s chocolate to guys, be it “giri-choko” to coworkers, “tomo-choko” to friends, or “honmei-choko” as expressions of love. Romance is a popular theme in anime, and Valentine’s Day-themed episodes, often complete with chocolates and confessions, abound. I do not mean to portray this in a negative light; I usually enjoy the use of the holiday in the series I watch, and the whole chocolates-giving thing can be used to great effect. Exempli gratia, a quick search for “Valentine” on Konachan yielded this, among others:
But I’m sure many of you who might be reading this already know most of I’ve said so far, not to mention the fact that where I live, Valentine’s Day ended as I was typing this up. As for my own goings-on of late, I’ve been accumulating some most excellent loot, but I cannot yet post in detail about it a friend has my camera for a school project. Also, I will be attending both Anime Boston and PAX East this year, though unfortunately I could only get a Sunday pass for the latter
But that should be enough for the moment. As always, thanks for reading.
In a stunning move, NIS America has stepped into the anime market and licensed Toradora! (among a few other titles), offering collector’s items as well.
Press Release (PDF) ANN Article
The other titles are Pandora Hearts, Persona ~trinity soul~, and Our Home’s Fox Diety.
Now knowing NISA, we’re looking at some nice collectors items here. We could be looking at CDs for the OST or some OP/ED themes. We could be looking at figures. Art books. Hell, we could be looking at just about anything.
My only major concern is that with NISA taking their first step into the anime business, I have no idea if they are going to release a dub or not. I make a habit of not supporting dub-only releases. I will grudgingly buy Toradora!, even if it’s sub-only, but I certainly won’t be supporting any of their other releases if that’s the case. However, this is NISA we’re talking about. It’s a company that takes Japanese stuff, translates it, and redubs it for a living. I’m hoping I can count on them to pull through for a dub. Apparently, pre-orders were going to begin next month and sale was going to begin in April, but these have been pushed back. Hopefully, this is for something related to a dub, which would put my only major concern to rest.
I’ve speculated that this sudden licensing deal, namely with Toradora!, is related to the NIS game Zettai Hero Modification Project. Taiga Aisaka, as well as a few other characters, have cameos in this game. I suspect the licensing may be to alleviate any major issues with getting this game out to the general public. If this is the case, I hope that if they’re putting out dubbed releases that they can get To Aru Majutsu no Index as well, since Index makes a cameo in the same game.
I’d also love for them to pick up Toradora Portable! for PSP now that they have the license…

Unfortunately, I canceled the plan because my eyes were paining alot yesterday. Crap!! Missed the Indian Ocean rock show. Sadness, but can’t help it eyes are more important than a Rock show. Anyways, that thing aside, today I have seen Full Metal Alchemist, It’s about alchemy and two brother Edward and Al. Both of them are exceptional alchemists. Good storyline and the series is just awesome. And one more great thing girlfriend shouting on me, you don’t have time for me, blah blah….what can I do? I am pretty lame and lazy.. so thats it, then all that making up with her. After lots of apologies and a meeting date she calmed down again. lol….. Girls are always like this. You never know when they will cry or get angry on you? But in the end play good with them they will fall for you anyways.. And I got some great lyrics with me of some japanese anime which I usually watch. I will be updating them soon.
And today I found a great soothing song while surfing on web, its from some blog named “luckyless”, its awesome. It feels like eternity, just awesome. Oh yeah, and you should have listen to “Dream theater”, thats another one of my favorite rock bands. Thats quite enough about music.

The running gags may be cliché comedy-anime, but I still can’t get enough of them. This week though, Hideyoshi, OMG!!!
So a fairly bog-standard episode here, but is that really a bad thing? The episode is about an all out scavenger hunt using test questions to discover the coordinates. Seriously, why could my high school be this fun?? Of course, all the students running around give us the chance for craziness!
Tsuchiya going SEED mode in the girls locker room. Seriously, I can’t remember how much times this gag has been used, but me being a former Gundam SEED fan, I never grow tired of it! The situation here is that seeing all the girls garments in the lockers causes Tsuchiya to go all out, but he ultimately passes out from blood lose. Seriously, how is he still alive at the rate his nose bleeds!?
Tsuchiya's Camera, wish mine could do that.
I also love how Tsuchiya’s camera always goes limp when he is unamused!
A couples ticket to an amusement park. Perfect for Yuuji and Shouko! Well, not so much Yuuji!
"He's not my boyfriend, he's my husband"
Oh my, Yuuji you should just give up already! If you just give in maybe she’ll go easy on the chain! Or at least the stun-gun!
The return of Himeji's cooking! Boys beware!
ONEE-SAMA!!! And Minami get’s raepd…..again.
However, the “star” of this episode was clearly Hideyoshi!
"Hideyoshi! I love you!!"
So when Yuuji turns down the amusement park tickets, Akihisa asks Hideyoshi. He then comes up with the stupid idea that confessing under the sacred tree (which he believes is Hideyoshi, it has something to do with the kanji) brings you eternal blessings…..
Which prompts all the Class-F hoodies to confess their love for Hideyoshi! It’s a trap!!!
And of course, the Hideyoshi-fest doesn’t end there…
Not only does he “mysteriously” end up in a chinese dress…
...he's also promptly stripped out of it!
So I’m convinced that the producers of this show are just trying to sway the sexual orientations of all the weak-heart otaku out there! But it’s not working on me. NO NO, must resist the trap!!
AH, much better! Yuuko FTW! I’m so glad we have Yuuko in this show!
Overall, a fun episode. I’m really loving all the running gags in this show: Hideyoshi’s TRAP, Minami’s one sided yuri-love, Shouko, etc. Many may think that this stuff has all been done before, but I say so what? If it ain’t broke, why fix it? I mean it’s not like the production value is lacking, the show still is animated really well! Overall, I think Baka Test is exactly the type of anime I’m into now days. The right amount of comedy: a lot of it! Yes, I wish there were more romance, but honestly, I think this type of show does well without it. There’s just so many great characters that it keeps me pulled in.
I mean, talk of this has been around for a long time. BUT….
SERIOUSLY?
Of all the people? I mean, there could’ve been many other choices for Spike.
But… Keanu Reeves? Dude must be desperate or something. Now, don’t get me wrong, the idea of Cowboy Bebop becoming a live action film makes me squeal like a little fan-girl all over again.
All I ask is that they pick a great cast for it. This is not helping. Maybe if they pick an awesome director for it, they can change my mind.
Until then, Ash does not approve. You have to give me good reason to see how he would be a good Spike. I need trailers, script, and many other factors to make this a solid decision.
This episode begins with Filicia running the squad through a combat simulation using tanks simulation mode. After destroying a simulated target, Claus shows up bringing the squad some letters and communications from higher. Kanata gets a letter from her mother, and Noel gets a letter from her professor.
A bit later, Rio gives Kureha a key and tells her to get Claus a gift; Kureha seems very happy at the prospect. When Kureha gives Major Claus a bottle of wine we can see that she’s quite taken with Claus. Filicia walks up and shows Claus some paperwork from HQ, and Claus wishes Private Kureha good luck.
Filicia assembles the squad and tells them they’re taking a field trip, Kanata’s overjoyed. Filicia tells them that three observation stations on the south side of Seize, near the border with no man’s land, need to be inspected on the trip. Kureha says this is a mission, but Filicia says it’s a field trip. Noel says they can’t repair them if their broken because they’re black boxes.
Rio tells Noel, Kanata, and Kureha that just walking isn’t good enough, so they have to carry rucksacks. Well, those packs are very heavy and none of the three girls can manage to even get the packs off the ground until Rio gives them a demo, and it kicks her ass too.
After the girls are up and loaded, Filicia tells them that she and Rio will be waiting at their last stop. As the girls head off, we see that Rio will be following them (with a much lighter pack) while Filicia heads to the objective.
Well, as they march along, Kureha keeps complaining about how heavy the packs are and asks Noel how much further (are we there yet). After a bit of marching, a butterfly catches Kanata’s attention and when she looks over she spots the first observation post. When Kanata runs over and touches the station some Japanese style writing flashes in the air and Noel says it’s operating correctly.
The girls ask Noel where the next station is, so she pulls out the map and compass and points towards a mountain. Kureha isn’t very overjoyed about humping up a mountain, and she lets everyone know it. As they’re humping up the mountain, Kureha keeps bitching about the packs, and how Filicia and Rio must hate her, and even Kanata is at a loss for words. Then Kanata rushes ahead saying she hears it; Noel wonders if she’s broken until they discover Kanata as located a mountain stream.
Kureha takes off her boots and socks and jumps in the stream, and she’s soon joined by Kanata and Noel. While they splash and play, and Kureha keeps bitching about Filicia, we see Rio observing them from above. Once the girls go back to their unsecured packs they discover some “animal” has ransacked the packs, and their food and compass is missing.
Well, the girls decide to leave the packs hidden saying the most important thing is to finish the mission. Noel leads the way using terrain association to guide them since the compass is missing. When hunger strikes the group, Kanata uses her foraging skills and locates a Bayberry tree, but Kureha doesn’t want to stop saying that Major Claus once traveled three days across a desert without food to attack an enemy fortress. Kureha informs Kanata that Major Claus was once called the Desert Wolf, so she pushes the group on.
After locating the second device, the girls head towards the third and final device. Noel continues to use terrain association to guide the group, and Kanata even climbs a tree as they try to locate the third and final device. Just as the sun is setting, Kureha starts to go off on Noel for not having the compass and not being certain they are heading in the right direction. Then she starts yelling at Kanata for not being serious, but Kanata spots the last device in the distance. As the girls are rushing off towards the last device we see that Rio has their compass, and she decides they’ll be alright, so Rio heads towards a Bayberry tree where she runs into a wild boar.
When the girls reach the last device, Noel tells Kanata and Kureha to look towards the direction of the setting sun; no man’s land, the end of the inhabited world. Filicia walks out from behind the device and tells the girls that they wanted them to see this, and all the maidens of the fortress make this trip at least once and leave their signatures on the device, so they can say they saw the end of the world.
Kanata asks if this is history. Yes, and Filicia tells them they left them something else. Filicia leads them through a tunnel to a hidden hot spring. Once the girls are all inside the cave they find Rio waiting for them looking the worse for wear telling them they’re late. We see that Rio brought a load of Bayberries for the girls.
As everyone is relaxing in the warm waters, Filicia asks Rio if she won. Don’t ask. As the other girls are enjoying the spring, Rio asks Filicia if it was worth the effort, and she gets no reply, but we see that the girls have added their names to the device. Well, that’s all for this episode.
As I watch more episodes of Sora no Woto the more I find myself falling under the gentle web that the series is weaving around me. The first thread of Sora no Woto’s web I find myself being caught in is how the series mixes technology from the “lost world” with the much lower tech of the current world, and I also love how the current world’s culture is a mix of European and Asian culture. The second thread of Sora no Woto that’s wrapping itself around me is of course the military life the girls find themselves experiencing.
Lost tech and mixed cultures.
I continue to find myself enjoying how Sora no Woto mixes the tech from the “lost world” with the much simpler tech of the everyday. It’s a jarring contrast to see all the futuristic goodies popping out of the tank like its holographic combat displays then we see that the current world has to communicate via landline rotary dial phones and bugle calls. The current humans of Sora no Woto’s world know what they’ve lost, but they also know that if man once made it that knowledge maybe someday be reclaimed.
While this anime continues to show us viewers a world of mixed Japanese and European cultures, make no mistake, this series is Japanese through and through. This has been made clear at several points throughout series so far; Kanata comes from a village that celebrates O-bon, Kanata signs for her mother’s letter using a Hanko (Japanese signature stamp) thus confirming her adulthood (only adults in Japan can use a Hanko for official business). Oh, one scene in this episode really caught my attention further confirming the Japanese-ness of the story, when the three girls headed out on their fieldtrip they passed under a series of torii normally signifying a transition from the normal profane world to the sacred world of a shrine or temple. While the girls’ passage wasn’t one of a religious nature it did symbolize that the girls weren’t in Kansas anymore, or as Kanata asks Filicia “this is history”, Yes.
Here’s some additional information about the girls ages I found while looking through a 2Chan thread.
Filicia-age 19, Rio-age 18, Noel-age 16, Kanata-age 15, and Kureha-age 14; adulthood sure comes early in Sora no Woto.
Tropes and troops.
Like I mentioned in previous posts I find Sora no Woto satisfying because being a former long time member of the military (23 years) I feel the series hits the right tone in how it portrays military life in a non-combat outpost type of setting. While at first glance, Kanata, Kureha, Noel, Rio, and Filicia might seem to be tropes, but I can tell you for a fact that I’ve meet many a soldier that I could just change their names to any of the girl’s names and it would be almost a perfect personality match.
I think that every former member of the military can relate to the little “field trip” the girls experienced. Almost every squad I’ve ever been in has had a “Private Kureha” who’s always bitching and complaining about how heavy the packs are, or saying the Sergeant hates us, or is always asking “how far is it”, or keeps asking “are we lost”, and the beat goes on. I’ve had many experiences with the always chipper and enthusiastic “Kanata” types, and the quiet and not very outgoing “Noel” types.
But, I can really relate to both Filicia’s and Rio’s leadership styles. I’ve always felt that training should be serious but fun, and make no mistake about it, the “field trip” Filicia sent the girls on was real training. During the conduct of the mission, the girls operated as a small team lead by a junior leader (Cpl Noel), and it involved physical training (humping a rucksack), land navigation (compass method and terrain association), and above all, team building and small group leadership. While the girls didn’t fully succeed with their mission they did learn some lessons from their failures like, they need to be in better shape, and they need to secure their equipment better or a slickly boy (Rio) might just steal your stuff.
While the girls were going about their business they were never in any real danger because they were under the watchful eye of Sergeant Rio who would have stepped in if something really bad was going to happen. Sergeant Rio was doing her job nicely by making the training tough but safe, and if you noticed Rio never complains in front of the junior troops, only to her superior officer; bitches go up hill, and shit rolls down hill.
At the end of the world I find beauty.
While I’ve seen many people express the notion that Sara no Woto is invested with a feeling of Mono no Aware or loss that’s our, the viewers’ reaction to the world that Kanata and the others inhabit, not their subjective life experiences. We view their world though the prism of our experience of the joys of our modern world; don’t those girls know how backwards and behind their world has fallen, or man it must suck living in that country coming out of a terrible war experience.
“Bees are not as busy as we think they are. They just can’t buzz any slower” –Kim Hubbard
What I mean by this little quote is that we all live our lives through our subjective experiences in the world around us, and the observations of outsiders don’t affect our subjective reality. So, when I look at the world of Sora no Woto, I see a world beginning to recover from a great ecological disaster and a terrible war, but I also find beauty.
I find beauty in the fact the while the world might have decayed, the peoples’ spirits haven’t decayed. Kanata works hard at following her dream of learning music, and she takes joy in the natural world around her. Noel takes great pride in her job as a tank mechanic, and is a craftsman in her own way. I see beauty in watching Kureha trying to get the attention of the object of her affections in her inexperienced way. I see beauty in how Filicia and Rio take pride and satisfaction in their roles of being surrogate mothers and fathers to their motley crew. While the world might have decayed, the human spirit is still strong and life is beautiful, they just can’t buzz any slower.
